The Literacy Project is seeking a High School Equivalency (HSE) Preparation teacher who will also work as the Education and Career Advisor for HSE students in our Northampton classroom at 42 Gothic Street. The position is 35 hours a week for 39 weeks a year, and includes 12.5 hours of instructional time, 11.5 hours of preparation time, 5 hours for student advising, and 6 hours for administrative tasks, site and agency meetings, and professional development. The pay rate is $25 per hour plus benefit package.
The Instructor is responsible for planning and teaching 2 sections of HSE Preparation classes, one in-person and one remote on zoom, to adults and out of school youth along with Education and Career Advising, integrating student goals, computer literacy, and community engagement activities as appropriate. Career awareness and planning must be included in the lesson plans. This includes implementing contextualized curriculum for identified career paths. Additional responsibilities include initial and on-going assessment of students, student advising as appropriate, curriculum development, and working with and supervising classroom volunteers.
Additional responsibilities include recordkeeping, answering the telephone, responding to inquiries and taking messages, and participating in the general upkeep of the site. In addition, the Instructor participates in The Literacy Project monthly staff meetings, weekly site case management meetings, and staff development opportunities .
Desired qualifications include demonstrated knowledge and experience teaching HSE level curriculum to under-educated adults and youth, and newcomer and immigrant populations, using a student-centered approach. Experience with lesson planning and curriculum development, including transition-to-college programming, career planning, job search, and computer literacy are desired. Job requires a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree. Applicant should possess group and community-building skills, knowledge of the Northampton area community resources, and comfortable representing the agency in the community.
