The Literacy Project is seeking an Instructor/Advisor to teach high school equivalency and college and career readiness classes, as well as provide academic and career advising to our adult students. The position is based at our Northampton site, but all programming is currently being offered remotely. This position is 32 hours/week, which includes instructional time, prep, staff meetings and advising. The pay rate is $23.00/hour plus full benefits.
The Instructor is responsible for planning and teaching HSE Preparation and College and Career Readiness classes to adults and out-of-school youth, integrating student goals, computer literacy, and community engagement activities as appropriate. Classes are scheduled for weekday mornings and late afternoons/early evenings. Additional responsibilities include initial and on-going assessment of students, academic and career advising, curriculum development, record keeping, and supervising classroom volunteers. The Instructor participates in The Literacy Project’s monthly staff meetings, weekly site case management meetings, and staff development opportunities. Additional responsibilities include phone and email correspondence and general maintenance of the site.
Desired qualifications include demonstrated knowledge and experience teaching HSE-level curriculum to under-educated adults and youth, and newcomer and immigrant populations, using a culturally-sensitive, student-centered approach; significant classroom teaching experience; experience with lesson planning and curriculum development; knowledge of learning differences and learning disabilities; knowledge of and experience with transition-to-college programming, career planning, job search, and computer literacy; excellent written and verbal communication skills; demonstrated interpersonal and community-building skills; knowledge of Northampton-area community resources. A Bachelor’s Degree or higher and successful completion of a background screening/CORI is required for this position.
