History in the Making
On Tuesday March The 18th a small group of us decided to go and join some peaceful war protesters that were holding up signs on Main St. in Ware. When we arrived they had already left. We then decided to go down to the Town Hall to find out about getting a permit so we could have our own demonstration. After being directed to the Town Selectmen's office, I asked the receptionist if she could tell us what we needed to do to get a permit. Much to our surprise she didn't know. She took down my name and number and told me that she would look into it and get back to me.
So in the middle of typing this, Wendy (the receptionist) called back. She told me that she had contacted the Chief of Police, and he said that we did not need a permit. Although the police would prefer to know when and where we were going to protest, in case anything happened. Other than that we had every right to protest as long as we weren't on private property, blocking traffic or disturbing the peace.
We are now trying to organize information about what is happening in Iraq to help back up our opinions. Once we have put a good number of reasons for protesting the potential war we hope to gather together and voice our opinions publicly.
