Lesson 9: Spelling, Punctuation, and Capitalization
Introduction The “mechanics” of writing include spelling, punctuation, and
capitalization. In this lesson, you
will learn the importance of correct spelling, punctuation, and
capitalization in the GED Writing Test and in general writing. ObjectivesWhen you complete this lesson you will: Þ Learn interesting
tricks to help you spell words correctly. Þ Learn and apply
the rules for using punctuation correctly. Þ Capitalize proper
nouns but not common nouns. Learning Activities Video: Þ
Watch Program 9 where writers discuss the importance of editing their
writing. As you watch, think about
the kinds of errors you make. Think
about how you want to improve your editing so you’ll make fewer errors. Workbook: Þ Read pages
173-176 and complete the “Sneak Preview.” Þ Read page 177.
Then complete and correct the exercises on pages 178-189 about spelling words
that sound the same, punctuating correctly, and capitalizing correctly. Þ Complete and
correct “GED Practice” on pages 190-192. This section is similar to the GED
