Lesson 7:  Effective Sentences, Parts One and Two

 

Introduction

Writing complete, effective sentences is the key to success on both parts of the GED Writing Test and to successful writing in general.  In this lesson, you will learn how to correct sentence problems, such as fragments and run-ons, as well as how to write compound and complex sentences.

 

Objectives

When you complete this lesson you will:

·        Understand the importance of writing complete, correct, and clear sentences.

·        Learn how to correct common sentence errors.

·        Combine clauses and phrases effectively.

 

Part One

Learning Activities

 

Workbook: 

·        Read pages 94-95 and complete “Sneak Preview.”

·        Read page 97. Then complete and correct the exercises on pages 98-109 about writing complete thoughts, end punctuation, sentence fragments, and run-on sentences.

·        Complete and correct “GED Practice” on pages 110-112. This section is similar to the GED Writing Test.

 

Video: 

Watch Program 7 where writers discuss how to write clear, effective sentences. As you watch, look for the different ways of writing sentences.

 

Internet: 

·        Log onto your Home Space at http://litlink.ket.org and follow the links to GED Connection, Language Arts Writing.

·        Under Internet  Activities, open “7: Grammatically Correct Sentences” and complete the following:

o       Read “About This Activity.”

o       Read “Key Ideas.”

o       Complete all parts of the “Activity.” (NOTE: Be sure to click on “Save” after you type in each box.)

o       Complete the “Quiz” and check your answers.

o       Complete the “Follow Up” activities.

 

Part Two

Video:  Review Program 7 as needed.

 

Workbook: 

·        Read pages 113-116 and complete the “Sneak Preview.”

·        Read page 117. Then complete and correct the exercises on pages 118-129 about compound sentences, complex sentences, and combining details.

Complete and correct the “GED Practice” on pages 130-132. This section is similar to the GED Writing Test.

·        Log onto your Home Space at http://litlink.ket.org and follow the links to GED Connection, Language Arts Writing. Under Internet Activities, open “7: Sentence and Paragraph Development” and complete the following.
