Lesson 6:  Writing Style and Word Choice

 

Introduction

Style is the “feel” of a piece of writing.  In this unit, you will learn how writing gets its style from sentence structure, word choice, tone, level of formality, and other dimensions.  You will also learn how to choose a proper style for your GED essay with regard to your audience, purpose, and format.

 

Objectives

When you complete this lesson you will:

·        Understand how writers create different styles according to audience, purpose, and format.

·        Practice writing more clearly and concisely.

·        Practice choosing words more carefully.

 

Learning Activities

 

Video: 

·        Watch Program 6 where writers describe different writing styles. As you watch, think about how you might create a writing style that would be effective in your GED essay.

 

Workbook: 

·        Read pages 73-76 and complete the “Sneak Preview.”

·        Read page 77. Then complete and correct the exercises on pages 78-79 about audience and purpose, writing clearly and concisely, and word selection.

·        Complete and correct “GED Practice” on pages 90-92. This section is similar to the GED Writing Test.

 

Internet: 

·        Log onto your Home Space at http://litlink.ket.org and follow the links to GED Connection, Language Arts Writing.

·        Under Learning Modules, open “Unit 5: Writing a Review” and complete Activities 1-7. (NOTE: Be sure to click on “Save” after you type in the boxes in each Activity.)
