Lesson 5:  Organized Writing

Introduction

In this lesson, you will learn to organize your essay into three parts:  the introduction, the body, and the conclusion.  In addition, you will learn the ways to organize the body of the essay including sequence, comparison and contrast, and cause and effect.

 

Objectives

When you complete this lesson you will:

·        Write an essay that includes an introduction, a body, and a conclusion.

·        Learn ways to organize the body of an essay.

·        Find out how to support and elaborate your ideas.

 

Learning Activities

Video: 

·        Watch Program 5 where writers and teachers talk about how to organize writing. As you watch, look for advice about how to organize an essay.

 

Workbook: 

Activity 1

·        Read pages 53-56 and complete “Sneak Preview.”

·        Read page 57. Then, complete and correct the exercises on pages 58-69 about the three-part structure, methods of organization, and supporting the main idea.

 

Activity 2

·        Complete and correct “GED Practice” on pages 70-72. This section is similar to the GED Writing Test.

 

Internet: 

·        Log onto your Home Space at http://litlink.ket.org and follow the links to GED   Connection, Language Arts Writing.

·        Under Learning Modules, open “Unit 4: Preparing to Write a Review” and complete Activities 1-7. (NOTE: Be sure to click on “Save” after you type in the boxes in each Activity.)
