Lesson 4:  The Writing Process

Introduction

This lesson focuses on the three steps in the writing process:  prewriting or brainstorming, writing, and revising. You will also learn about purpose and audience. It’s a good idea to understand why you are writing and for whom you are writing.

Objectives

When you complete this unit you will

· Understand writing as a multi-stage process.

· Prewrite by generating and grouping ideas.

· Write a first draft, revise, and then correct (edit).

Learning Activities

Video:

Þ Watch Program 4 where writers and teachers talk about the writing process. As you watch, look for the steps the writers take as they write.

Workbook:

Þ Read pages 33-36 and complete the “Sneak Preview.”

Þ Read page 37. Then, complete and correct the exercises on pages 38-49 about the writing process: prewriting, writing a draft, revising, editing, and publishing.

Þ Complete and correct “GED Practice” on pages 50-52. This section is similar to the GED Writing Test. Share your results with your teacher.

Þ Log onto your Home Space at http://litlink.ket.org and follow the links to GED Connection, Language Arts Writing.

Þ Under Learning Modules, open “Unit 3: Writing Feature Stories” and complete Activities 1-5. (NOTE: Be sure to click on “Save” after you type in the boxes after each activity.)
