Lesson 38: Introduction to Algebra Introduction Algebra focuses on operations and strategies. You use algebraic thinking to solve many
problems. For example, if you use a
formula, you are using algebra. In
this lesson you will learn about equations, inverse operations, properties,
and signed numbers and how they all relate to algebra. Objectives When you complete this lesson you will: q
Work with positive and negative numbers. q
Apply commutative and associative properties. q
Solve simple equations by isolating the variable. Learning Activities 1.
Video: a.
Watch Program 38 where people show how they use algebra and how to
perform algebraic calculations. b.
As you watch, look for general rules you can apply to many different
problems. 2. Workbook: a. Read pages
247-250 and complete “Sneak Preview.” b. Read page 251.
Then complete and correct the exercises on pages 252-265 about working with
signed numbers, working with expressions, and working with equations. c. Complete and
correct the “GED Practice” on pages 266-268. This section is similar to the
GED Math Test. 3. Internet: a. Log onto your
Home Space at http://litlink.ket.org
and follow the links to GED Connection, Math. b. Under Internet
Activities, open “34, 38-39: Formulas, Algebra & Special
Topics” and complete the following:
