Lesson 37: Statistics and Probability Introduction You read and hear statistics every day. Your understanding of fractions and percents will help you make
sense of the data in those statistics.
Probability involves comparing the number of desirable outcomes to the
number of possible outcomes to determine the chance that an event will
occur. In this lesson, you will learn
to interpret statistics and how to calculate probability. Objectives When you complete this lesson you will: q
Use statistics to draw conclusions. q
Understand and interpret surveys and polls. q
Find the probability of single events as well as independent and
dependent events. Learning Activities 1.
Video: a.
Watch Program 37 where people in a variety of jobs explain information
about statistics and probability. b.
As you watch, note the kinds of events whose probability is discussed. 2. Workbook: a. Read pages
227-230 and complete the “Sneak Preview.” b. Read page 231.
Then complete and correct the exercises on pages 232-241 about using
statistics to draw conclusions, understanding the meaning of chance, and
applying theoretical probability. c. Complete and correct
the “GED Practice” on pages 242-246. This section is similar to the GED Math
Test. 3. Internet: a. Log onto your
Home Space at http://litlink.ket.org
and follow the links to GED Connection, Math. b. Under Internet
Activities, open “36-37: Data Analysis & Statistics” and complete the
following:
i.
Read “About This Activity.”
ii.
Read “Key Ideas.”
iii.
Complete all parts of the “Activity.” (NOTE: Be sure to click on
“Save” after you type in each box.
iv.
Complete the “Quiz” and check your answers.
v.
Complete the “Follow Up” activities. Learning on the Go! With The Literacy
