Lesson 33:  Measurement

Introduction

Units of measurement for time, distance, size, and weight can give you an idea of the relative size of things. To measure, you must understand the divisions of the measurement tool you are using. In this lesson, you will learn conversions between units; how to calculate perimeter, area, and volume; and how to use the English and metric systems.

 

Objectives

When you complete this lesson you will:

q       Make conversions within the English system of measurement.

q       Understand how the metric system works.

q       Find perimeter and area.

 

Learning Activities

 

1.      Video: 

a.        Watch Program 33 where workers will demonstrate how they use measurement on their jobs.

b.      As you watch, notice the strategies the workers use to make conversions between units.

 

2.       Workbook: 

a.        Read pages 129-132 and complete “Sneak Preview.”

b.      Read page 133. Then complete and correct the exercises on pages 134-145 about the English system of measurement, the metric system, and finding perimeter and area.

c.       Complete and correct the “GED Practice” on pages 146-148. This section is similar to the GED Math Test.

 

3.       Internet: 

a.       Log onto your Home Space at http://litlink.ket.org and follow the links to GED Connection, Math.

b.      Under Learning Modules, open “Unit 3: Saving money on your water bill” and complete Activities 1-6. (NOTE: Be sure to click on “Save” after you type in the boxes after each activity.)
