Lesson 32: Ratio, Proportion, and Percent Introduction A ratio uses division to compare numbers. A proportion sets up equal ratios. A percent is a ratio that compares a number with 100. In this lesson, you will learn how to
calculate ratio, proportion, and percent for the GED Math Test and to solve
problems in your life. Objectives When you complete this lesson you will: q

Solve for the missing number in a proportion. q
Solve percent problems using ratio and proportion. Learning Activities 1. Video: a.
Watch Program 32 where people in a variety of jobs
show how to use ratio, proportion, and percent to make comparisons and solve
problems. b.
As you watch, note how fractions are related to
ratios, proportions, and percents. 2. Workbook: a. Read pages 107-110 and complete the “Sneak
Preview.” b. Read page 111.
Then complete and correct the exercises on pages 112-123 about working with
ratios, working with proportions, working with map scales, and working with
percent. c. Complete and
correct the “GED Practice” on pages 124-128. This section is similar to the
GED Math Test. 3. Internet: a. Log onto your
Home Space at http://litlink.ket.org
and follow the links to GED Connection, Math. b. Under Internet
Activities, open “32: Ratio, Proportion, and Percent” and complete the
following:
i.
Read “About This Activity.”
ii.
Read “Key Ideas.”
iii.
Complete all parts of the “Activity.” (NOTE: Be sure to click on
“Save” after you type in each box.)
iv.
Complete the “Quiz” and check your answers.
v.
