Lesson 31:  Fractions

Introduction

 

A fraction compares a number of parts to a whole, and it represents a value between whole numbers.  In this unit, you will learn the parts of a fraction; adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions; and prime factoring.

 

Objectives

 

When you complete this lesson you will:

  1. Understand the meaning of fractions as an amount and a number.
  2. Add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions.
  3. Solve problems involving time, money, and measurement.

 

Learning Activities

 

1.      Video: 

a.       Watch Program 31 where people in a variety of jobs show how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions.

b.      As you watch, think about how you use fractions in your life.

 

2.          Workbook: 

a.       Read pages 85-88 and complete the “Sneak Preview.”

b.      Read page 85. Then complete and correct the exercises on pages 86-103 about basic operations with fractions, problem solving with fractions, and everyday fractions.

c.       Complete and correct the “GED Practice” on pages 104-106. This section is similar to the GED Math Test.

 

3.          Internet: 

a.       Log onto your Home Space at http://litlink.ket.org and follow the links to GED Connection, Math. Under Internet Activities, open “30-31: Decimals & Fractions” and complete the following:

 

                                                   i.      Read “About This Activity.”

                                                 ii.      Read “Key Ideas.”

                                               iii.      Complete all parts of the “Activity.” (NOTE: Be sure to click on “Save” after you type in each box.

                                               iv.      Complete the “Quiz” and check your answers. 

                                                 v.      Complete the “Follow Up” activities.
