Lesson 30:  Decimals

Introduction

Decimal numbers are used to show fractional parts of whole numbers.  You find them in prices, weights, and other measures in daily living.  This lesson will discuss decimals as fractions, place value, comparing decimals, and adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions.

 

Objectives

 

When you complete this lesson you will:

  1. Understand the meaning and value of decimal numbers.
  2. Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals.
  3. Solve problems involving money, time, and distance.

 

Learning Activities

 

1.      Video:  Watch Program 30 where instructors and students solve a variety of problems that include decimal numbers. As you watch, pay close attention to the explanations of how decimals relate to fractions and percents.

 

2.      Workbook: 

a.       Read pages 63-66 and complete “Sneak Preview.”

b.      Read page 67. Then complete and correct the exercises on pages 68-79 about understanding decimal values, basic operations with decimals, and everyday decimals.

c.       Complete and correct the “GED Practice” on pages 80-84. This section is similar to the GED Math Test.

 

3.      Internet: 

a.       Log onto your Home Space at http://litlink.ket.org and follow the links to GED Connection, Math.

b.      Under Learning Modules, open “Unit 2: Saving money on your telephone bill” and complete Activities 1-5. (NOTE: Be sure to click on “Save” after you type in the boxes after each activity.)
