Lesson 27:  Passing the GED Math Test

 

Introduction

This lesson provides an overview of the GED Math Test.  In the GED Math Test, you will answer 40 multiple-choice questions and 10 alternate format questions (bubble grids and coordinate plane grids) based on readings, graphs, tables, and diagrams.   Math content areas covered include number operations and number sense (20-30% of questions); measurement and geometry (20-30% of questions); data analysis, statistics, and probability (20-30% of questions); and algebra, functions, and patterns (20-30% of questions).  You will have 90 minutes to answer 50 questions.

 

Objectives

When you complete this lesson you will: 

̃    Understand GED math content and skills.

̃    Investigate the types of questions on the test.

̃    Learn how to approach problems based on real-life contexts.

 

Learning Activities

 

Video: 

̃    Watch Program 27 for an overview of the GED Math Test.

̃    As you watch, look for advice about solving GED math problems, especially the step-by-step approach to solving word problems.

 

Workbook: 

̃    Read pages 13-14 about the GED Math Test.

̃    Complete the Math Pretest on pages 1- 7 in the GED Connection Math workbook.

o       Evaluate your answers using the answer key on pages 8-12.

̃    Read page 15. Complete the GED Practice exercises on pages 16-22. Correct the exercises using the answer key in the back of the book.


Internet:

o       Log on to your Home Space at http://litlink.ket.org and follow the links to GED Connection, Math.

o       Under Internet Activities, open “27: Passing the GED Math Test” and read the page.

o       Under Practice Tests, select either “Math Test 1” or “Math Test 2” and complete it.
