Lesson 25:  Chemistry

 

Introduction

 

Chemistry is the study of the composition and properties of matter.  Matter is always around us.    Although we may not always be aware of them, the principles of chemistry are always around us.   Whether you are scrambling an egg or removing rust from your car, you use principles of chemistry. 

 

Objectives

 

When you complete this lesson you will:

·        Learn about the structure and states of matter.

·        Understand how elements behave when combined.

·        Explore the behavior of various chemicals.

 

Learning Activities

 

1.       Video: 

·        Watch Program 25 for an overview of Chemistry. 

·        As you watch, look for uses of chemistry in everyday life and on the job. 

 

2.      Workbook: 

 

·        Develop and practice your science skills on pages 206 – 217 of the GED Connection Science/Social Studies workbook. 

·        Complete the GED Practice exercises on pages 218 - 220 in the GED Connection Science/Social Studies workbook.  Correct the exercises using the answer key in the back of the book beginning on page 267. 

 

3.       Internet:

    • Log on to your Home Space at http://litlink.ket.org and follow the links to GED Connection, Social Studies.
      • Under Internet Activities, open “25: Chemistry” and complete the following:
        1. Read “About This Activity.”
        2. Read “Key Ideas.”
        3. Complete all parts of the “Activity.” (NOTE: Be sure to click on “Save” after you type in each box.)
        4. Complete the “Quiz” and check your answers.
        5. Complete the “Follow Up” activities as needed.
