Lesson 23:  Life Science

 

Introduction

 

Life Science (biology) covers almost half the questions on the GED Science test.  Topics covered in this lesson include cells, genetics, evolution, organisms, photosynthesis, ecosystems, and ecology.

 

Objectives

 

When you complete this lesson you will:

·        Recognize and describe cell structure.

·        Be familiar with genetics and evolution.

·        Explore how organisms interact with one another and with their environment.

 

Learning Activities

 

1.       Video: 

·        Watch Program 23 for an overview of Life Science. 

·        As you watch, notice the similarities and differences in living things. 

 

2.      Workbook: 

 

·        Develop and practice your science skills on pages 165 – 177 of the GED Connection Science/Social Studies workbook. 

·        Complete the GED Practice exercises on pages 178 - 180 in the GED Connection Science/Social Studies workbook.  Correct the exercises using the answer key in the back of the book beginning on page 264.

 

3.       Internet:

    • Log on to your Home Space at http://litlink.ket.org and follow the links to GED Connection, Social Studies.
      • Under Internet Activities, open “23: Life Science” and complete the following:
        1. Read “About This Activity.”
        2. Read “Key Ideas.”
        3. Complete all parts of the “Activity.” (NOTE: Be sure to click on “Save” after you type in each box.)
        4. Complete the “Quiz” and check your answers.
        5. Complete the “Follow Up” activities as needed.
