 Lesson 20:  Civics and Government

 

Introduction

 

This lesson focuses on civics and government, which accounts for 25% of the questions on the GED social studies test.  What do you have as rights as a US citizen?  Do you vote?  Why or why not?  Who carries the power in our country and how does that affect you?

 

Objectives

 

When you complete this lesson you will:

·        Understand the balance of power specified in our Constitution.

·        Describe the federal, state, and local governments.

·        Evaluate the roles and responsibilities of citizens.

 

Learning Activities

 

1.       Video: 

·        Watch Program 20 for an overview of civics and government. 

·        As you watch, think about what citizenship means to you, your family, and your friends.   As you watch the video, think about who has power in our nation and how they can and/or cannot use it. 

 

2.      Workbook: 

 

  • Complete the exercises in the GED Connection Science/Social Studies workbook on pages 94 - 105.  Evaluate your answers using the answer key starting on page 259.   Share your results with your teacher. 
  • Complete the GED Practice exercises on pages 106  – 108.  Correct the exercises using the answer key in the back of the book starting on page 260.

 

3.       Internet:

    • Under Internet Activities, open “20:  Civics and Government” and complete the following: 
        1. Read “About This Activity.”
        2. Read “Key Ideas.”
        3. Complete all parts of the “Activity.” (NOTE: Be sure to click on “Save” after you type in each box.)
        4. Complete the “Quiz” and check your answers.
        5. Complete the “Follow Up” activities as needed.
