 Lesson19:  Economics

 

Introduction

 

This lesson briefly covers economics, which accounts for twenty percent of the questions in the GED Social Studies test.     What kinds of things do you do every day that have an impact on the economy?  How does the economy affect you?  Often, choices are involved.  People weigh costs and benefits to make choices about earning, spending, and saving. 

 

Objectives

 

When you complete this lesson you will:

·        Be familiar with the market-based US economy.

·        Investigate the roles that individuals play in the economy.

·        Evaluate the role of government in the economy.

 

Learning Activities

 

1.       Video: 

·        Watch Program 19 for an overview of economics. 

·        As you watch, think about who manages our economy and how.  How are economic decisions made?

 

2.      Workbook: 

 

  • Complete the exercises in the GED Connection Science/Social Studies workbook on pages 74 - 85.  Evaluate your answers using the answer key starting on page 257.   Share your results with your teacher. 
  • Complete the GED Practice exercises on pages 86 – 88.  Correct the exercises using the answer key in the back of the book starting on page 258.

 

3.       Internet:

    • Under Internet Activities, open “19:  Economics” and complete the following: 
        1. Read “About This Activity.”
        2. Read “Key Ideas.”
        3. Complete all parts of the “Activity.” (NOTE: Be sure to click on “Save” after you type in each box.)
        4. Complete the “Quiz” and check your answers.
        5. Complete the “Follow Up” activities as needed.
