Lesson18:  Themes in World History

 

Introduction

 

This lesson briefly covers major themes in World history, which accounts for fifteen percent of the GED Social Studies test.     

 

Objectives

 

When you complete this lesson you will:

·        Explore the reasons why modern nations developed.

·        Be aware of the global significance of the Industrial Revolution.

·        Consider the role and spread of democracy.

 

Learning Activities

 

1.       Video: 

a.       Watch Program 18 for an overview of the Themes in World History. 

b.      As you watch, think about how human invention and creativity have marked world civilizations. 

c.       What world events in your lifetime may become part of the story of world history?

 

2.      Workbook: 

 

  • Complete the exercises in the GED Connection Science/Social Studies workbook on pages 54 - 65.  Evaluate your answers using the answer key starting on page 255.   Share your results with your teacher. 
  • Complete the GED Practice exercises on pages 66 – 68.  Correct the exercises using the answer key in the back of the book starting on page 256.

 

3.       Internet:

    • Log on to your Home Space at http://litlink.ket.org and follow the links to GED Connection, Social Studies.
      • Under Internet Activities, open “18: Themes in World History” and complete the following: 
        1. Read “About This Activity.”
        2. Read “Key Ideas.”
        3. Complete all parts of the “Activity.” (NOTE: Be sure to click on “Save” after you type in each box.)
        4. Complete the “Quiz” and check your answers.
        5. Complete the “Follow Up” activities as needed.
