Lesson17:  Themes in US History

 

Introduction

 

This lesson briefly covers major themes in US history; the mixing of many cultures, the ideals of individual rights and freedoms, and the ever-changing nature of everyday life are some of the themes addressed.    

 

Objectives

 

When you complete this lesson you will:

·        Understand more about the relationships among cultural groups in US history.

·        Recognize the role of technology over time in the US.

·        Investigate the rise of the US as a world power.

 

Learning Activities

 

1.       Video: 

a.       Watch Program 17 for an overview of the Themes in US History. 

b.      As you watch, think about how these themes have evolved and how they still affect us today. 

c.       Some people say that if we don’t understand history, we are doomed to repeat it.  Do you agree or disagree with this idea?

 

2.      Workbook: 

 

  • Complete the exercises in the GED Connection Science/Social Studies workbook on pages 30 - 45.  Evaluate your answers using the answer key starting on page 253.   Share your results with your teacher. 
  • Complete the GED Practice exercises on pages 46 – 48.  Correct the exercises using the answer key in the back of the book starting on page 255.

 

3.       Internet:

    • Log on to your Home Space at http://litlink.ket.org and follow the links to GED Connection, Social Studies.
      • Under Internet Activities, open “17: Themes in US History” and complete the following: 
        1. Read “About This Activity.”
        2. Read “Key Ideas.”
        3. Complete all parts of the “Activity.” (NOTE: Be sure to click on “Save” after you type in each box.)
        4. Complete the “Quiz” and check your answers.
        5. Complete the “Follow Up” activities as needed.
