Lesson 10: The GED Essay
IntroductionThe essay portion of the GED Writing Test requires that you write your
essay under time restrictions. In this lesson, you will learn how to respond
to a given topic, how to write the essay under time restrictions, and how the
essays are scored. You should practice
writing on a range of general topics and in the test format under time
restrictions to prepare for the test. ObjectivesWhen you complete this lesson you will: Þ
Apply the writing process to writing a GED essay. Þ Know what makes
an effective GED essay. Þ Develop and
practice a strategy for the test essay. Learning Activities Video: Þ
Watch Program 10 where writers and teachers discuss the essay prompts
on the GED test. As you watch, pay attention to the essay questions. Notice the kinds of things you might be
asked to write about. Workbook: Þ Read pages
193-196 and complete “Sneak Preview.”

Þ Read page 197.
Then complete and correct the exercises on pages 198-209 about the writing
topic, planning your essay, revising and editing your essay, knowing your
goal, and devising your essay test strategy. Þ Complete and
correct “GED Practice” on pages 210-212. This section is similar to the GED

Log onto your Home Space at http://litlink.ket.org and follow the links
to GED Connection, Language Arts Writing. Þ Under Internet
Activities, open “3-6, 10: Essay” and complete the following: Þ Read “About This
Activity.” Þ Read “Key Ideas.” Þ Complete all
parts of the “Activity.” (NOTE: Be sure to click on “Save” after you type in
each box.) Þ Complete the
“Quiz” and check your answers. Þ Complete the
