Is
this Distance Learning Course for Me?
People need a good combination of study skills, access to the equipment,
and personal attributes to succeed in the online component of this course. Circle the answer for each item that
describes you the best.
- My technology access is best
described as…
- I have a computer at home with
Internet access and I have my own e-mail account.
- I have regular access to a
computer with Internet access and I have my own e-mail account.
- I don’t have access to a
computer or an e-mail address.
- My technology skills are…
- Very good. I can use e-mail,
Web browsers, word-processing software, and can download files and attach
a file to e-mail. I like trying to solve technology problems on my own
and I don’t get frustrated easily.
- Average. I can use e-mail, Web
browsers and word-processing software. I don’t feel comfortable solving
technology problems on my own.
- Below average. I have used
e-mail, Web browsers and word-processing software, but I get frustrated
when things don’t work the way they should.
- Face-to-face communication with
other people is…
- Not essential to me. I
understand that quality learning can take place without face-to-face
interaction.
- Important to me and I wonder
about my ability to learn without being able to see the instructor or
other students.
- Essential and I can’t learn
unless I can interact in person with the instructor and other students.
- When I need help in class…
- I feel comfortable asking
questions and asking for help when I need it.
- I hesitate to ask questions of
the instructor, but I will ask for help if I need it.
- I don’t like to ask questions
or ask for help.
- Considering my work, academic,
and personal schedule, the amount of time I have to devote to this class
is…
- More than 10 hours per week.
- 6-10 hours per week.
- less than 6 hours per week.
- I would describe my personal
learning style as…
- Self-motivated,
self-disciplined and organized.
- Motivated, but I need help
remembering assignments and due dates.
- Pretty disorganized – I need
someone to motivate me and help me stay on top of my coursework.
- My reading, writing, and math
abilities are…
- Very good. I enjoy reading,
writing, and math. I have
confidence in my abilities.
- Average. I understand what I
read when I have to. I could
probably write something similar to an essay. I can do enough math to get by.
- In need of improvement. I don’t like reading and I look for
classes without a lot of writing assignments. Math makes me feel anxious.
- When I have directions for an
assignment, I prefer…
- Figuring out the instructions
myself.
- Trying to follow the
directions on my own, then asking for help if needed.
- Having the instructions
explained to me.
- I need people to remind me of
due dates and assignments…
- Rarely
- Sometimes
- Often
- My critical thinking skills
are…
- Very good. I can analyze class
materials and formulate opinions on what I’ve learned.
- Fair. I can sometimes analyze
class materials and form opinions but it is a struggle for me.
- Poor. Analyzing material is
not something I do well.
- When I need to use e-mail,
computers, or other new technologies…
- I look forward to learning new
skills and mastering new technologies.
- I get nervous, but I like to
learn and try anyway.
- I would rather not try it and
I put it off.
- I am considering taking an
online course because…
- I need my GED immediately to
go on with my career and/or educational goals.
- I’m curious about getting my
GED and I have room in my schedule.
- I never really thought about
making a plan and committing myself to get my GED.

To have success at online
learning, you'll need to answer mostly “a” with just a few answers of “b” for
the majority of the statements. Those
responses would make you a good candidate for the online learning class.
If you answered “c” to any
questions, you may need to make some adjustments to your study schedule or get
comfortable with technology before you take the online component of this
class. Online learning is not a good
choice for every student, and your skills and interests may fit better in a GED classroom.
