Analyzing Editorial Cartoons

 

Do you give up quickly when you see an editorial cartoon?  Many people do.   Yet, if you just give it a try, like most things, you’ll be able to figure it out!  This worksheet is meant to help you organize your ideas when you’re analyzing editorial cartoons – and you don’t have to find all of these clues.  

 

Visual Clues

 

1.                  List the people and/or objects that you see in the cartoon.

 

 

2.                  Which of these things are symbols?

 

 

3.                  What do you think each symbol means?

 

 

Word Clues (not all editorial cartoons use words)

 

1.                  Look at the title and/or captions on the cartoon.

 

 

2.                   Which words or phrases are used to identify the people and/or objects in the cartoon?

 

 

3.                  Which words or phrases seem to be the most important?  Why?

 

 

4.                  Record any important dates or numbers in the cartoon. 

 

 

5.                  List adjectives that describe any emotions in the cartoon.

 

Summarize and analyze!

 

1.                  Describe the actions taking place in the cartoons.

 

 

2.                  Explain how the words in the cartoons clarify the symbols.

 

 

3.                  Explain the message of the cartoon.

 

 

4.                  Do you know what event was the inspiration for the cartoon?

 

 

5.                  What groups of people might agree or disagree with the cartoon’s message?  Why?
