Sentence Combining

The Alien & Sedition Acts

Combine the groups of sentences into single sentences without losing any meaning.  (You will have to change the wording)

 

1.                   The Bill of Rights was ratified soon after the Constitution was originally ratified in 1789.  The Bill of Rights includes “Freedom of Speech.”   “Freedom of Speech” is in the First Amendment to the Constitution.

2.                   The Alien and Sedition Acts were 4 separate laws.  In 1798 they were passed by a Federalist Congress and signed by a Federalist President.  The president was John Adams.

3.                   The Sedition Act was one of the Alien and Sedition Acts.  It provided penalties for libel against the President or Congress.

4.                   The Sedition Act would be considered unconstitutional today.  In 1798 the Supreme Court had not yet established its powers to strike down federal laws.

5.                   In 1798 there was a real fear of radicals. These were people who said the American Revolution did not go far enough. The French Revolution inspired many of them.

6.                   There was a sense that change was coming.  The Federalists were becoming unpopular.  The Jeffersonians were becoming more popular.  The Federalists were afraid of losing power.
