The Nervous System

Functions:  Receives and sends information about internal and external changes

Organs:

Brain: The main organ of the nervous system. The brain is made up of billions of nerve cells.

Spinal cord: The nerve cells that run up and down the backbone sending messages to and from the brain and the rest of the body.

The Basic Neuron types:

1.    Bipolar (interneuron)

2.    Unipolar (Sensory Neuron)

3.    Mutipolar (Motoneuron)

4.    Pyramidal cell

Nerve Cells: Cells that carry messages (impulses) are also known as neurons.

Sensory Organs: Respond to physical and chemical stimuli and detect changes in the body position. The nervous system is connected also to the sensory system.

Eyes:  Organs of sight with receptors that respond to light.

Eyes change light patterns (colors, brightness, movement) to electrical impulses that are sent to the brain, which understands them as images.

Ears: Main functions of the ears are hearing and balance.

The eardrum receives vibrations and transmits them to tiny connective bones

Nose: The nostrils are used for breathing, smelling, and detecting fire and chemicals.

Tongue: Has chemical receptors that respond to different taste and flavors.

Skin: Has physical receptors and temperature
