Measurement

Measurement is expresses in units of length, volume, weight, and time. Standard measurements were developed so that people would have a common understanding of each unit. These pages cover measurement units used in the United States.

Length

1 mile (mi)    = 1,760 yards (yd)

1 mile            = 5,280 feet (ft)

1 yard            = 3 feet

1 yard            = 36 inches

Volume

1 gallon (gal) = 4 quarts (qt)

1 quart            = 2 pints (pt)

1 pint              = 2 cups (c)

1 cup              = 8 oz

1 oz                = 2 tablespoons

1 tablespoon  = 3 teaspoons

Weight

1 ton (T)         = 2,000 pounds (lb)

1 pound          = 16 ounces (oz)

Time

1 year (yr)      = 12 months (mo)

1 year             = 52 weeks (wk)

1 year             = 365 days (d)

1 week           = 7 days

1 day              = 24 hours (hr)

1 hour            =  60 minutes (min)

1 minute        = 60 seconds (sec)

Converting Measurements There are two basic rules for converting measurements.

Rule 1 Multiply to convert a larger measure to a smaller measure.

How many inches are in 5 feet?

5ft x 12 in/ft = 60 in

How many pints are there in 9 quarts?

9 qt x 2pt/qt = 18 pt

How many pounds are there in 3 tons?

3T x 2,ooo lb/T = 6,000 lb

How many hours are there in 3 days?

3d x 24 hr/d = 72

Metric Measurements

Gram  (g) is a measure of weight.

Liter  (L) is a measure of volume.

Meter (M) is a measure of length.

1 Kilo     1 kilogram = 1,000 grams

1 kiloliter                  = 1,000 liters

1 kilometer               = 1,000 meters

Centi       1 meter     = 100 centimeters

Milli        1 gram     = 1,000 mailgrams

                1 liter       = 1,000 milliliters

                1 meter    = 1,000 millimeters
