Eligibility:

To enroll as a learner you must be 16 years old and out of public schools.
If you are not 18, you will need a letter from your last high school that shows you have officially withdrawn.

Getting Started:

Call (or stop by) to set up an appointment with Louise or Joe.
It is best to call after 12:00 pm, but we have a good answering machine.
If you leave a message, make sure to leave your name and a phone number where we can reach you.

If you stop by in the morning before 12:00, you will see classes going on.   We will only have time to set up an appointment for later.
It is best to stop by after 12:00 pm.

First Appointment:

We will ask you questions to get you onto the computer system
These questions also help us understand how you learn and ways we can help you learn.
Some of the questions are to help us understand our whole community and its needs.

The goal of this appointment is to make sure we can help you in your efforts to achieve your goals.
We have different classes for different needs and learning styles, but no two learners are the same.

We may need to schedule some assessments (in Reading and Math) to know what class is best for you.

If you are here for a GED, you will probably also be asked to complete a practice GED test at home.
This helps us know that you are serious and are willing to do some work to get what you want.

Starting Classes:

Usually there will be 10 or fewer learners in a class with one or more teachers and volunteers.

We can provide you with books, notebooks, pencils, binders, folders etc. to do your work AND to keep your work organized.

In your first month of classes you will probably sit down with a teacher to start organizing your Goals, Objectives and Learning Steps
Objectives and Learning Steps are the main way that we help you track your progress towards your Goals.

You will also be tested so that we have another starting point to measure your progress.
(We will test you again in another 3 to 4 months)

Staying in Classes:

You will probably be in a class paid for by the Department of Education.
They know that you must have GOOD ATTENDANCE in classes in order to MAKE PROGRESS.
If your attendance is poor, we may need to give your spot to someone else who is able to take advantage of the opportunity.

In order to MAKE PROGRESS, you must PARTICIPATE in class activities.
Whatever class you are in, you will be expected to work as part of a group AND on your own in the classroom.
(We know everybody is different, and that people have special needs, but you will be expected to try your best)

This is Adult Education, so the rules here are not geared to children.
There are some basic rules that people are expected to understand and apply to their effort here.
                                              These rules are
1.                     Respect your own safety
2.                     Respect the safety of others
3.                     Respect property
4.                     Participate
