It was a little loud, but everyone was engaged in the vocabulary/sentence writing exercises.

Vocabulary/Sentence Structure and Math

Obsequious is an adjective.  Obsequiousness is the noun form and obsequiously is the adverb form.

Ostentatious an adjective.  Ostentation is the noun form and ostentatiously is the adverb form.

We put these words into sentences, underlined the subjects, circled the verbs and labeled them

Sentence Structure:

We used sentences from the Word Bank activity and analyzed them to find all subjects and

verbs. We also classified them as Simple, Complex, or Compound Complex.  (No Compound

Sentences proper turned up.)

                                          R3.1b Re-read to clarify meaning (Reading Strategies)

Individual math.

 

Group activity:  gave class a sheet with a variety of expressions such as "raining cats and dogs,"

and asked them to match them with their meanings. We then read and discussed origins of the

expressions. Class had fun with it and was surprised at some of the meanings and origins.

Everyone worked on their math for the first hour.  Second hour we did a group

activity…number/letters, ex. 26 = L's of the A. They really enjoyed it and everyone participated.

       SELF MANAGEMENT - Accurately assess self, set personal goals, monitor progress & exhibit self control (Personal Qualities)

One student finished her Word Bank/Sentence Structure work and then read.  Two others

alternated between their Math and their Writing projects. One student stayed focused on

reviewing Percent Problems, another reviewed GED Math problems while two others worked

on reading and writing with volunteers.

         P-1  Explore, identify, analyze, and extend patterns in mathematical and adult contextual situations (Patterns, Functions and

Class did a group "Scratch Your Head Math" activity. I gave them 10 word problems that

required careful reading and some logic and reasoning. Ex: Divide 30 by 1/2 and add 10. What

do you get?  Most people guessed 25. The answer is actually 70. They were really surprised.

We did it on the board and they realized it was a division problem.

 

We also did a "quiz" about the Civil war. We will put focus on that and other issues realted to

the Civil war in February.

            Order and organize objects and events using similarities and difference and explain reasoning for doing so (Order and

Elements, Mixtures, and Compounds

These types of classification systems are frequently the basis for readings on the GED.  We

played with related vocabulary and definitions, doing some reading, some discussion, and a

crossword puzzle.

Finishing Up.

Three people finished their writing projects (with one person finishing TWO!).  Another learner

focused on reviewing Math (especially percent problems) for the GED.

Two others worked on reading and writing with volunteer tutors.
