Why scientists order and organize phenomena in our natural and designed
world (Order and Organization)
The activity was built around a table showing the major components of
the atmosphere
(nitrogen, oxygen, and argon) along with some of the most important
trace elements.
We identified the major greenhouse gasses without going into how they
warm the atmosphere.
We also classified the components of the atmosphere as either compounds
or elements.
An element is a substance consisting of only one kind of atom.
A compound is a substance consisting of molecules which are different
types of atoms
chemically bonded together.
There was a lot of good discussion about scientific knowledge vs
absolute certainty with
perspectives from the Third World since we have people in class who grew
up in Vietnam and
Pakistan.
