N-1 Represent and use numbers in
a variety of equivalent forms in contextual situations (Number Sense)
Math: Percents, Fractions and
Equations.
Most of the time was spent on individual Math work, but we also went
over the meaning of an
equation (with examples) and looked at proportions and percents (how
they relate to fractions).
We read and listened to a NPR Workforce report by a Princeton professor
who tracked a group
of low wage earners over a ten year period. This report used a lot of
fractions and percents.

Also Gave a Writing Assignment/Suggestion for November:
Describe and explain at least three parallels (similarities) between the
1920s and now.
(Remember our current unit is about
the Industrial Revolution and the process of modernization).
We spent about 40 minutes coming up with a definition of
"modernization"
Modernization - the process of developing new technology and adapting to it. (If we had more
time we might have come up with a better definition, but we did point
out that "education" is
part of how we adapt to new technology.)

In our class there is a monthly writing requirement, but we do not
require that people respond to
any specific topic. For today's
Group Time assignment people were asked to generate and
explain (in writing) 3 similarities between now and the 1920s. For the first hour people worked
mostly independently - reading and writing on that topic.
For the second hour we went over a few of those parallels
1. Economic Boom
Times - in the 1920s and now there was
economic growth and prosperity,
but not everyone shared in that
prosperity.
2. Republican
Rule - in the 1920s (just like today)
the Republicans controlled the Presidency,
the Congress, the Judiciary, most
governorships and state legislatures.
3. Resentment
against Immigrants - In the 1920s
Immigration was legally cut from a waterfall to
a trickle. Today people are advocating new laws to cut
down on (illegal) immigration including
building fences and walls. There also was (and is) fear that some
immigrants might be
dangerous terrorists.
We did not have enough time to talk about fundamentalism and reaction.

(Critical Thinking: Cognition & Strategies)
We have been on this chapter about the 1920s for a while now. Today, the assignment was to
identify a list of important concepts and people mentioned in the
chapter. As time went on
people got into it. (Some people
who didn't finish before we reviewed the hard ones as a group,
decided to finish on their own).
We also went over a sample ballot for the elections today.

R3.4a Identify and search for key words to make meaning (Reading Strategies)
The immense differences in orders of magnitude in our universe
(Measurement, Magnitude, and Models)
We focused on "fullerenes", a recently discovered form of
carbon where the atoms are arranged
in spherical (buckyballs) or cylindrical shapes (nanotubes).
Most of the nanotechnology that is currently on the market (in textiles
and cosmetics, etc) are
colloids (a special type of mixture.)
We also looked at the three types of mixtures recognized by chemistry
(solutions, colloids, and
suspensions) which are basically differentiated by the size of the
particles being mixed.
A crossword puzzle and several reading packets helped people clarify
terminology, definitions,
and examples.
"nano" refers to a billion (as in 1 billionth or
1/1,000,000,000)

Amber arranged and organized a wonderful morning for us. We were able to participate in a
College Success class doing a fun activity around test taking
strategies. We also got a
presentation from an admissions counselor (Sarah) in the President's
Conference room. This
presentation included lots of information about admissions, financial
aid, degree programs,
choosing a major, using the course catalog, student support services,
and transitions to 4 year
schools. Then we had pizza and a
presentation from the Testing Director (Jean).
All together there were 17 GED students (including 5 from Even Start, 3
from the Career
Center, and 1 graduate).

W2.2e Use proper syntax in writing simple sentences (Writing: Structure
and Mechanics)
Word Forms - Words can change their
meanings slightly when their form changes.
Usually the
form change is only the ending, but there are also some irregular
changes.
Changing a word ending can also change the part of speech.
Example: organize (v) - organization (n), organizer (n) -
organizational (adj)
Most of the class was spent on Individual Learning Time so that people
could finish their
monthly writing projects.
