Reading:

The class silently read "Franklin Delano Roosevelt: The Great Depression and World War II" by

Bonnie J. Hinman (Amazing Americans Series  - McGraw Hill: Wright Group Readers).

Everyone finished in between 30 to 34 minutes.

They were also asked to list 3 important facts about FDR and to relate his life and career to the Industrial Revolution.

Most of the rest of the class was spent on an extensive crossword puzzle that required a close

reading of the book (no word bank although there were page cues).

Everyone had very good reason to feel successful.

Elements, Compounds, and Mixtures.  (Classification Systems)

Lots of reading, lots of GED practice.  Some discussion and some note taking.

Most of what we see and work with are systems involving both matter and energy.  Substances

(MATTER) can be classified as Pure (Ideal) or Mixtures (really everything we deal with is a

mixture).

Pure substances are either elements (only one king of atom) or compounds (different kinds of

atoms chemically bonded together forming molecules).

Mixtures can be solutions, colloids, or suspensions.  In solutions the particles are the smallest

(being molecules).  Colloids have slightly bigger particles, and suspensions have the biggest.

Reading: Social Studies: Eleanor Roosevelt - Patron Saint of Liberalism.

The class had nearly 2 solid hours of reading on the life and career of Eleanor Roosevelt.  First

they did an advance organizer on Liberalism and the industrial revolution.  During the reading

they were asked to take notes under three columns.

1.  Eleanor Roosevelt - an outsider in her own family

2.  Eleanor Roosevelt - the conscience of the New Deal

3.  Eleanor Roosevelt - a modern progressive liberal

Some students chose to make notes in the margins of the reading or to use color coded

underlining/highlighting to identify examples that fell under those categories.

We also had a visit from Jim Williams, US Army Recruiter, who spoke to the class for about 20

minutes before they left.

Math - Individual programs

(A few people chose to focus on trying to finish their reading on Eleanor Roosevelt  or do their

writing project.  We also got several people to do Owl Tests.)

Group Time: We briefly looked at a possible system to give a monthly score based on 1.

Attendance (45%), Writing Project (15%), Math Unit (15%), and (Word Bank Vocabulary

15%).  The base would be 90 pts but addition points could be earned for Attendance above

95%, extra Math Units or Writing projects and other goals achieved.  Points would be deducted

for projects finished after the scheduled month.)

I'm wondering if I could come to school Monday-Thursday 9-12 pm instead of staying until 12:30.  I'll
