Did a review of some addition, subtraction, multiplication and division by 2, 3 and 4 numbers.

Good group activity.

   W1.2b Write one word or simple phrase answers to basic questions (Writing Expression)

Wanted to start class on their July writing projects, so we did a group activity….a biographical

poem that we will put into a format over the next few days. Everyone had a chance to add the

descriptive words they wanted to use. All descriptive words were solicited from learners by

teacher and were written on the whiteboard. Students picked and chose words from lists that

they felt fit the various lines of the poem.

Finalized the format for the poem writing project. Students rewrote their draft and started to

type them into the computers.

Group activity…introduced fractions to large group. Some students are not at the level yet but

were anxious to learn something new. We covered…"What is a fraction?", identifying the 3

types of fractions, terminology associated with fractions, i.e.. Numerator, denominator,

reducing, cancellation, etc.  For the students that are familiar this was a good review, for the

students who never did fractions, this was a fun exercise. They want to continue with fractions

More work today with identifying fractions and writing fractions in response to word problems.

Class requested that we do some work with checks, deposits, withdrawals and account

management. We will begin that work next week as well as continue with fractions and

Group work today. Worked on a crossword puzzle and read  a couple articles in News For You.

 

 

Started unit on banking. What is a checking account and how do you manage it? We did an

exercise using the vocabulary associated with checking accounts…credit, debits, deposit, service

charge, withdrawal. We also went over what information has to be on a check. Did a little

practice with check ledger. Students found this to be a little confusing but plugged on through

Learners' "PLACE" in relationship to the rest of the world (Environments & Interdependence)

Went over a large list of vocabulary associated with banking and managing checking and savings

 accounts. Students came up with simple definitions and wrote them in their word bank books.

 

We had a very interesting and productive discussion about the current situation in the Middle

East. Many questions and comments about what we as a nation are doing and how the rest of

the world perceives us.
