appropriate algorithms and a variety

techniques (Number Relationships & Computation) MATHEMATICS - Perform basic computations;
approach practical problems by choosing
from a variety of math techniques (Basic Skills)
Mostly Math: Learning or Practicing
Long Division.
We started with a discussion about Terry Schiavo which included Peter
reading a long article about the
history of the case to the
class.
Three learners worked on
learning or practicing long division.
Two learners practiced with fractions
(mostly reducing to lowest terms).
(One learner didn't really want to do anything and was finally asked
to leave.)
One person was reading about luminaries of the Woman's Suffrage
Movement. Another worked on
her report about George Washington.

Writing:
The general prompt was:
"Describe a time when you did something that you never before
thought you could ever do . . . Or
. . .
Describe something that you
do not believe you can do, but suspect/fear/expect you might have to do
sometime in the future.
People were encouraged to come up with their own writing topics if they
felt better that way. They
were especially encouraged to continue working on pieces that they had
already started..
Some people also went over some "Revision Considerations" to
help them make a start at improving
their drafts.

The class was actually held at Café
Koko as part of our Twentieth Anniversary Coffee House. At
any given time there was about 60 people in attendance including former
students, volunteers,
administrators, community supporters of The Literacy Project, and family
and friends of current
learners. The general public
also participated as people shared music and singing along with poetry
and prose writings created during class. Community members also shared their writing and creativity -
sometimes improvising in tenor
with the improvised nature of the entire proceedings. (It was a good
time.)

Did a fun and quick exercise with a
blank map of the US. Asked students to fill in as many states as
they could in 15 minutes. We then reviewed each students totals. We also
played a quick "What's the
capital of….?"
Went over some abbreviations for some of the states.
Individual math.

Individualized Writing:
Two people worked on poetry and put some up on the website. One person
started an essay written
longhand. Another person started
doing final revisions of a humorous autobiographical story. One
person worked on Math word problems the whole period instead of writing,
and another was really into
a book about Quakers and the
only writing she did was to take notes.

Read and discussed more on the
Civil war…battles of Gettysburg, Lee's defeat at Appomattox, the
Union Blockade, etc. Good overall class participation.

the students were able to
complete about half of the 100 problems in 2 minutes.

Writing:
People could choose from two different prompts:
"Is government taxation nothing more than organized theft?"
and "What is the heaviest word in the
English language?"
People were encouraged to use lists to generate ways of approaching the
topics. Most everybody
wrote for at least the first hour of class.

Writing:
Strategies for generating ideas: Making lists and free writing. (Also talking and imagining).
Prompt: "What happens to people who are unable or unwilling to
work/struggle/fight to achieve their
vision of the world. Are you one
of those people? How do you know?
People came up with different lists.
We also did a free write, and we tried to imagine (and describe) a
character.
Some people wrote until they got tired.
Others thought there was too much talking.

Students typed out writings, and / or created a piece of art with their

Did some group math…adding and
subtracting fractions with unlike denominators. Did some fraction
division review. Individual math. One student decided to share her
thoughts about what heterosexual
means. She posed some interesting questions. Good discussion followed
although one student got
really defensive about his views regarding heterosexuality and
homosexuality. The student who brought
up the discussion handled it well and other students chimed in to ease a
tense situation due to the
subject matter. Great class!!!!
