Continued some short readings on history of settling of the colonies. Read short piece about the

Puritans, who they were and how their religion dictated life in the colonies. Readings generated some

excellent discussions…religion, treatment of women then and now, who has power in a society, etc.

directions, reports, graphs) (Basic Skills)

Two people worked on writing while one person did a Math TABE and another started learning about

atoms.

  --Allocation of power and authority (Power, Authority, & Participation)  Express thoughts in complete

sentences (Writing) Interpret Charts & Graphs (Reading)    

Did some reading and map work about slavery history in the US between 1820 and 1850. Had good

discussions about what they knew about slavery and the pre-civil war activities to  abolish

slavery.Read and discussed a little about Frederick Douglass.

Peggy Wood did a creative writing workshop. She led them through various writing activities.  Students

 were encouraged to share their writings with the group. This workshop was well received.

  --Means and varieties of civic participation (Power, Authority, & Participation)        WRITING - Communicate

 thoughts, ideas & information in writing; Create documents (letters, directions, reports, graphs) (Basic Skills)

Read some information about the impact of the president's proposed budget cuts and wrote letters to

our federal Senators and Representative.

Individual Work (Due to bad weather, it would not be reasonable to mark people absent when it was

unsafe to travel)

One person made revisions to a writing project (film review) and then did World History GED

exercises.

Another person worked on place value and rounding in whole numbers.

One person finished her TABE testing by completing her Math and doing the whole Reading test.

  --  Write at greater length in response to a topic or question (Writing)      WRITING - Communicate thoughts,

ideas & information in writing; Create documents (letters, directions, reports, graphs) (Basic Skills)

Writing:

A small group worked on writing based on these prompts:

"Nature puts pressures on every human being"

and

"Culture puts pressures on every individual"

They were asked to write a few sentences on each of those prompts and most were able to develop

their initial writing into something more structured and coherent.

Other people worked on writing projects they had started previously. 

One person did TABEs.

Started doing some short history lessons.. Read about some of the early explorers…good class…fun

and students said they really enjoyed it.

A few people worked on various writing projects with assistance from a volunteer and the instructor. 

A few others worked on Math with assistance from the instructor (order of operations and least

common denominators).  People chipped in to help each other with their work.
