others and build/rebuild a good civilized life for all) Explain
People put good effort into these "Writing for yourself"

the internet to find
more information on the hurricane aftermath or the pageant of

WRITING

Develop writing vocabulary (Writing)
Writing:
We talked about what makes a good essay. Most people thought an essay should be thoughtful.
People also thought an essay
should be organized into sentences and paragraphs. People knew
that good essays have an
introduction, body, and conclusion. Some essays are opinionated and
some essays try to persuade others to change their own opinions.
Most of the class was Individual Learning Time so that people could work
on their own writing.
A few people also chose to check
out our new online writing place (Moodle) which had
assessment criteria for the classic "Five-Paragraph Essay" and
a sample essay to rate.
The sample essay was John Burgin's "Transitions of Man." It
wasn't a five-paragraph essay, but
was an example of very good
writing.
We finished the class by going over some "transitions" in
Western Civilization that lead from
Ancient Civilizations to Modern Times.

Civil War Review and ex-parte

The first hour was just a review of some basic facts about the Civil
War. People were
encouraged to calculate the percentage of those facts that they knew.
During the second hour the class worked alone or in groups to complete a
Cloze activity about
ex-parte Milligan which set the rules for martial law and trials of
civilians by military tribunals.
In ex-parte Milligan the court said that civilians could not be tried by
the military nor could
martial law be imposed (by suspending habeas corpus) unless actual
warfare made it impossible
for civilian courts to function.
