Imprortant People in the Conflict
Over Slavery in the US (1820-1877)
The class generated a list that included Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S.
Grant, William Tecumseh
Sherman, Jefferson Davis, John C. Calhoun, Dred Scott, Sojouner Truth,
Harriet Tubman,
Frederick Douglass, John Brown, and Robert E. Lee. (Eli Whitney was also listed.)
People did research on the web and in books to find words to describe
how they were important
to the Union and/or to the
Conflict Over Slavery.
Everybody took their own notes and then we made some "summary"
notes together.

Paragraphs:
Paragraphs are groups of sentences that work together to develop a main
idea.
People wrote brief paragraphs based the Civil War. They were prompted to think of: Causes,
Events Before, Events During, Events After, Consequences, Famous People,
and "Systems".
We also chose books at random and
each learner randomly picked out five paragraphs. They
counted the sentences in each paragraph and came up with averages. The overall average for
the class was 5 sentences per paragraph, but the shortest paragraph had
1 sentence and the
longest paragraph had 20 sentences.

Effects of different approaches to conflict resolution (Conflict &
Resolution)
The Civil War - The Causes
We listed and discussed as many causes as we could think of. "Slavery" and "States
Rights"
came up right away. So did a lot
of other events leading up to the Civil War.
Luz asked why
the Mexican American War was included which lead to a discussion about
restricting slavery to
the southeast (not allowing it to expand westward).
We also looked a synopsis of the first episode (The Cause) of the Ken
Burn's film, "The Civil
War" before watching it.
Most people took a lot of notes while watching and that lead to an
informed discussion afterwards.

Analyze and explain methods for solving proportions (Number
Relationships & Computation)
MATHEMATICS - Perform basic computations; approach practical problems by
choosing from a variety of math techniques
Different ways to look at word
problems.
Different steps to solve word problems.
There were 4 similar problems that could be solved
proportionately/algebraically or through
straight arithmetic.
We analyzed those problems to identify the fractions, the proportions,
the multiplication
operations and the division operations.
A proportion written mathematically looks like two equivalent fractions:
3/4 = 75/100
A proportion can also be written in this form:
3 is to 4 as 75 is to 100
or
3 girls is to 4 boys as 75 girls are to 100 boys

Science: Linnaean Classification
System: The PLANT KINGDOM: Photosynthesis and Plant
Structure and Reproduction.
Spent some time making sure we knew that the Linnaean system only deals
with living things. It
is a system or grouping living
things together. (Things like Kingdoms,
species, plants, dogs,
bacteria are IN this system. Things like rocks, energy, air, and
television sets are NOT in this
system.)
We also reviewed photosynthesis, a system by which green plants take in
carbon dioxide and
water and change them into oxygen and sugar. A green chemical called chlorophyll absorbs the
energy from sunlight and uses it to make these transformations.
We even had time to look at flowering plants (herbaceous plants) and the
male and female parts
of a flower.

"QUESTION" WORDS
We had to "fix"
sentences like:
1. Abraham Lincoln who was elected president in 1860
2. Slavery, which existed before the Revolution and the Constitution
etc.
Some people removed the complexity by removing the question words. Other people made
other changes. Sometimes they
kept the complexity by adding a final verb phrase.

Subjects are the people, places, things, or ideas (nouns, pronouns) that
are doing the action of
the verb.

"went". Ask "who went

Civil War: The Emancipation
Proclamation
Before watching Episode 3 of the Ken Burns Civil War series we talked
about the difference
between an event and a conditions.
We also got into a debate about who should be called a
"martyr". Some people
argued that John Brown and suicide bombers are martyrs because they
died for their beliefs. Others
argued that they died because of crimes they committed - and their
"actions" have to be
considered separately from their beliefs.
Episode three was about the events in 1862 leading up to the
Emancipation Proclamation which
took effect on Jan 1, 1863.
(We also discussed the consequences of the Emancipation Proclamation -
which were also
covered by the video.)

Awareness of rules for grammar and mechanics (Writing)
Writing:
Three rules for combining independent clauses (simple sentences) to make compound
sentences.
1. A comma and a coordinating conjunction (small connecting words) Ex
2. Just a semicolon - if the two sentences are very closely related
3. A semicolon, a big connecting word, and a comma.
Most people are getting more comfortable indentifying subjects and verbs
as we went over
material in the GED book. Everybody wrote complete sentences.
