Use computation and proportions to solve problems (Number Relationships
& Computation)
MATHEMATICS - Perform basic computations; approach practical problems by
choosing from a variety of math techniques
Math: Solving proportions using cross multiplication.
If x/y=a/b then ay=bx.
This always works IF the fractions (or ratios) ARE equal.
2/4 = 4/8 so 2(8) = 4(4) or 16 = 16
3/4 = 9/12 so 3(12) = 4(9) or 36 = 36
Problem:
If a restaurant can buy fresh corn for $2.50 per dozen, how much do they
pay for a single
ear of corn?
I Set up the proportion in a way that MAKES SENSE
$2.5 for 12 ears
$X for 1 ear (X stands for an unknown amount of money)
II. Set up the proportion mathematically and solve
2.5/X = 12/1
2.5(1) = 12(X)
2.5 = 12X
2.5/12 = X
0.20833333333333333333333333333333 = X
X = $0.21 (or 21 cents per
ear of corn)
(We also did the DOE Surveys during Individual Learning Time.)

Interpret Charts & Graphs (Reading)
How everything is made up of a small number of building blocks
(Similarity and Diversity)
(Human) Body Systems
We started by looking at our anatomical torso. Based on an observation about its posterior,
we examined the terms "Symmetry", "Bilateral
Symmetry" and "Radial Symmetry". Humans
and all vertebrates are
bilaterally symmetrical (corresponding size, shape, and proportions
along a single dividing line - or reflecting "sides") but no
organism is perfectly symmetrical.
(Luz found a great webpage on symmetry and made copies for the class.)
After looking at our building block framework
(>>>>atoms>molecules>organelles>cells>tissues>ORGANS>SYSTEMS>organisms>>>>>>
), we listed as many organs as possible. We then organized them into systems and compared
what we came up with to
something Louise found on the internet.
(The only system we
had missed was the IMMUNE system - interesting because we have been
studying HIV and
AIDs with Timothy).
Class members spontaneously started dividing up body systems to do more
research and
make presentations.

John had people visualize their "domicile" when they were 10
or 11years old. Then we did a
few writing and sharing
exercises based on childhood memories and experiences at home.
John tried to help people focus on specific objects and sense
memories. This turned out to
really helped some people recall vivid memories of their parents and
childhood sensations.
He gave a homework assignment to write a "scene" from
childhood showing the dynamics of
a family - and he read the

Alexander Hamilton who personified northern interests was suspicious of

Solving proportions different ways:
"If there are 5 girls for every 3 boys in the football club, how
many boys are there if there
are 15 girls?"
Most people "knew" the correct answer was 9 boys. BUT it was VERY difficult to explain
why.
Luz knew how to set up a proportion to cross multiply. (But for that to
make sense, the
proportion has to be constructed from corresponding items and you have
to accept that cross
multiplication is based on a
generalization that is ALWAYS true: "IF a/b=x/y, THEN ay=bx)
Most people used "patterns" to "step" from 5 girls
to 15 girls and following the same pattern

human body systems (physical, mental, social, and spiritual), their

(Systems and Interdependence)
How everything is made up of a small number of building blocks

Body Systems:
Timothy started with the word "homeostasis" (maintaining a
steady internal state despite
changes in the external environment) and reviewed the organization of
systems which is also
the "Building Blocks of Life" framework
(cells>tissues>ORGANS>SYSTEMS>organisms)
He went over the SKELETAL system (Each bone is an organ. Bones are tied
together with
ligaments. The functions of the
bone skeleton is to 1. Protects 2. Provide support, 3. Allow
for Movement 4. Produce blood
cells, 5. Store minerals).
He also went over the MUSCLE system.
Muscles are attached to bones by tendons.
Muscles work by contracting and relaxing. There are 3 types of muscles: 1. Skeletal (under
voluntary control, usually work in pairs) 2. Smooth (involuntary, mostly
in the digestive
track), and 3. Cardiac (the heart).

Write at greater length in response to a topic or question (Writing)
Some people had readings based on last week's suggested assignment to
write a scene from
childhood showing the dynamics of a family.
One exercise for today was to write about a time of happiness as an
adult or teenager. In
another exercise, people divided into pairs and wrote about a place they each knew. Then
they had to try to combine (interlace) the two paragraphs.
The suggested assignment for next week was to write about an adult
challenge. Before John
left he had everybody identify
something they could write about.
He also read some excerpts from Pat Frey's Oral History interview about
reclaiming words
after a difficult childhood.

Complexity of managing and resolving conflict (Conflict &
Resolution)
ACQUIRE AND EVALUATE INFORMATION (Information (Acquiring and Using))
Civil War:
Started by listing what we knew about the Civil War. We had a long list of battles, some
generals, some politicians (A. Lincoln and Jeff Davis) and one
abolitionist (Frederick
Douglass).
Then we looked at a "model" for reading about (and thinking
about) any historical event.
An event has causes and background causes (Each cause is an event or a
condition that has
its own causes).
An event also has results (or consequences . . . It is a cause for other
events or conditions.)
In History we are mostly concerned with human causes, but human plans
can go wrong and
sometimes the results of what people do is not what was intended.
The US was threatened with Civil War over slavery (and the control of
the West) since at
least 1820. There were many
skillful attempts to avoid war by compromise, but events got
out of control and a very bloody war resulted.
When the Civil War was over the mercantile, financial, and industrial
interests of the North
were able to take firm leadership of the nation's future.
