READING - Locate, understand & interpret written information in prose and documents (manuals, graphs, and schedules)

Civil War Overview: Reading Activity

We went over the 1832 "Nullification Crisis" where South Carolina tried to declare a federal law

(the "tariff from hell") unconstitutional until Andrew Jackson threatened to lead the US Army

against them.

Then we did a CLOZE reading activity (Fill in the blanks) about the Civil War, its main causes

Analyze and explain methods for solving proportions (Number Relationships & Computation)

MATHEMATICS - Perform basic computations; approach practical problems by choosing from a variety of math techniques

More practice with Equivalent Fractions and proportions.

We looked at some of the relationships that can be found in a proportion (vertical, horizontal,

and cross).

People had a choice to do one of two sheets (either straight proportions or one with all kinds of

"checks" and relationships written out).  Many did both.

Female 16.00 -- 17.99

I helped teach someone about cross multipl[ication].

Excretory System:

Timothy spent a lot of time integrating basic parts of speech (word forms and usage) into this

lesson.  He started with a definition of the word "process" which lead into a review of 8 parts of

speech.  Then he covered the functions of the Excretory system and started going over the

major organs.

Function of Excretory system - facilitates the removal of various waste products from the body.

We went over a possible structure for web pages on body systems.  (We also reassigned the

body systems for some people).  The main requirement was to have one or two COMPLETE

SENTENCES describing the FUNCTION of the body system.  The organs could be dealt with

in a list and any graphics are optional.

One person (Carl) completed his system (Circulatory) and posted it on the web.  Others made

good progress.  Two people chose to write GED essays.

John C. Calhoun and an Aggressive Defense of Slavery

We reviewed Calhoun's theory of Nullification and read excerpts from his arguments that

slavery was a "positive good".

There was a discussion about the value of studying history . . . especially  why study people

never heard of before (like John C. Calhoun) and arguments that are no longer accepted (like

John C. Calhoun's arguments in favor of nullification and slavery).

Joe was in a bad mood because the class did not get off to a smooth start and probably did not

give a very good response  BUT, he did start the class with this advance organizer:

"After 1820 leadership in the South began to defend slavery as a "positive good" for the South,

for the nation, and for the black slaves themselves.

An ideology is a complex set of beliefs and ways of looking at the world that advance the

interests of a certain group"

We also talked about how slavery - even though it is now illegal - continues to exist and is in the

news more and more.

Analyze and explain computation procedures and how operations are related (esp. reversibility of operations) (Number

    Relationships & Computation)

MATHEMATICS - Perform basic computations; approach practical problems by choosing from a variety of math techniques

Math: Reciprocals (flipping or inverting) and GED calculator practice

The reciprocal of 3/5 is 5/3.

The reciprocal of 5 is 1/5 (because 5=5/1)

The reciprocal of 1/7 = 7 (because 7=7/1)

We practiced dividing fractions using the GED calculator.

We also went over perfect squares and square roots.

We practiced estimating square roots and calculating them with the GED calculator.

  Student Comments

[Group Time:] worked on reciprocals with the class

Male 45.00 -- 59.99

[What didn't help?] my [at]ttention span was blocked in math just today.

Female 45.00 -- 59.99

I've made a lot of progress in my life.  No one [h]as the right to judge me on what I have all ready

learned.  IF they want me to [use] more judgment I will and they will like it.

Male 45.00 -- 59.99

[I learned today because . . .] Fractions are hard for me.  IT is nice to have the help to understand.

Male 18.00 -- 24.99

The Excretory System (and a Review of Body Systems So Far).

Timothy made presentation on skin which is the largest organ in the human body.

The main function of the skin is protection, but its excretory function is perspiration.  (Both of

these functions promote homeostasis).

The skin has two layers. 1. The Dermis is the thick inner layer that contains most of the growing

tissue. It also contains the nerves, blood vessels, and glands.   2. The epidermis is the then outer

layer.  Most of its cells are dead or dying.

Glands are little organs designed to collect and store materials for later use or disposals.

Sweat glands collect excess water and salts.  Sweat can also contain urea - a substance produced

 from the body's  nitrogen wastes

  Student Comments

Male 18.00 -- 24.99

I took notes on different systems.

I could have learned more but I am easily distracted.

Male 18.00 -- 24.99

looked up viruses and bacteria

Female 18.00 -- 24.99

I re-learned what all the body systems do. I also went on-line and I looked up what foods have sulfur

in them because I am allergic to sulfur added foods.

Civil War: ex-parte Merryman

"In a civil war some citizens of a nation state fight against other citizens of the same nation state

who are rebelling against the government.   What rights to rebels (or potential rebels) have

during times of civil war or rebellion?"

In 1861 (a month after Ft. Sumter) John Merryman was arrested for resisting federal troops in

Maryland.  President Lincoln argued he had the right to suspend habeas corpus in times of

rebellion.   Chief Justice Taney said that only Congress had that right, but Lincoln refused to

obey court orders to bring accused rebels to trial or set them free.

verb.  There is also a theory of evolution associated with Charles Darwin.)

Most people worked on various types of fraction operations.

The Nervous System:

http://www.literacyproject.org/Charboneau/tunits/Crosswords/NervousSystem.htm

The Nervous System receives and sends information about internal and external environmental

changes.

The 3 most important elements of the nervous system are:

1. The brain

2. Neurons (nerve cells)

3. Sense Organs

Timothy spent a lot of time on neurons and synapses.  He also distinguished between the

Central and Peripheral Nervous systems and talked about the different sensory organs and the

types of STIMULI that they convert into IMPULSES.

Also:

Receptors - receive stimuli from the environment so that neurons can transmit them as impulses

Effectors - body cells that receive stimuli from neurons.  (in the motor system, effectors are

muscle cells)
