(Order and Organization)
The Linnaean Classification System:
Discussion:
What is a classification system: an orderly way of grouping (or
dividing) things into categories
based on similarities and differences
What is the Linnaean Classification System - a way of grouping all
living things into 5 Kingdoms
with many sub groupings
What are the classification levels in the Linnaean System - Kingdoms,
Phyla, Classes, Orders,
Families, Genera, Species
What are the five Kingdoms in the Linnaean System? - Monera, Protista,
Fungi, Plants, Animals
Why do some scientists want to replace the Linnaean System? - There are
too many exceptions
(sub phyla and super orders etc.). Also it does not reflect the
developments suggested by the
theory of evolution.
We also did some GED practice reading about Arthropods - a phylum in the
Animal kingdom
that includes the "classes" Insects and Arachnids (spiders)

Civil War - Cause and Effects
Reading, GED item practice, discussion and questioning.
The Civil War was caused by a conflict over whether slavery should be
allowed to spread into
western states and territories.
The election of Abraham Lincoln demonstrated that the South had very little
political power in
the Union as a whole. This
caused a series of Secessions
The Emancipation Proclamation did not free all slaves. It only freed
slaves in rebel territories.
The effects of the Proclamation were to 1) Encourage Northerners with a
clear moral cause, 2)
Keep England out of the War, 3)Reduce the labor available to the South
4) Increase the
manpower available to the North (200,000 ex slaves joined the Union
Army) while 5) keeping
the loyal slave states securely on the Union side.
After the Civil War the following Amendments to the Constitution were
ratified:
1. The 13th Amendment outlawed slavery
2. The 14th Amendment guaranteed equal rights to all citizens (black or
white)
3. The 15th Amendment allowed all adult male (black or white) citizens
to vote.
