excellent discussions
regarding the articles we read. Class had a lot of opinions about the
new Pope and the
Catholic Church in General. We read an article about the increase in
teen use of pain pills.
Good discussion on that topic also. Good class today.

Did some reading about mysterious
disappearances. Some finished TABES. One student
took assessment pilot test on computer.
We did a couple of math crossword puzzles
focusing on X8 and X3 and spelling out the words for the numbers.

Acquire more organizational strategies (Writing) Spacer
Started doing some formal invitations and then write a formal response
to the invitation.
Most of the class had a hard time with this activity. A couple people
were able to do it fairly
well. We also did a "drill" activity on sentence fragments.
All this is to move them toward
being able to construct a paragraph that makes sense and is
grammatically correct. Our long
term goal is to be able to write an essay.

Introduced cinquains to the class. Read several, learned how to
construct a cinquain.
Students wrote 2 poems each and
shared them with the larger group. Discussed the various
kinds and styles of poetry. Read
and discussed poem by Edgar Guest called "Myself," "The
Raven" by Edgar Allen Poe and some amusing epitaphs from the
1800's. Good class!!!

Writing poetry is hard. You can't
force it, it has to flow. You need to have time to think about it. This
class wasn't as bad as I thought it

Did several math worksheets using
crossword puzzles to solve equations. Worked from
equation to answer and from answer to equation. Class did well with them even though they
grumbled at first. Everyone participated and did well helping one
another. Croswords
encompassed everything from addition, subtraction, multiplication,
division, fractions and
averages. Good exercises!

President supporting his Teacher of the Year nomination (this was just
for writing practice,
not really being sent). Wrote a couple cinquains for additional writing
practice. Looked at
some Andy Warhol art as a follow-up to an article about him.

Express thoughts in writing (Writing) Spacer
Did some writing practice using a writing prompts sheet. Class seemed to really like it. Came
up with some good written
responses. Second activity involved writing a poem in the shape
of a diamond using writing prompts again. Students shared their writing
s with the large
group. Both activities were very
successful in getting students to write.

We started a review of vocabulary associated with our Holocaust
readings. I created a
crossword puzzle using many of the words from our word list. It was
difficult for class as we
had not done a vocabulary review
for sometime. Overall the class did
well with it.
