Asked class for help deciphering some sayings that were written as a LD
person would hear them.
These were part of a training I had done and lost the answer key. Some
were very difficult, but the
class got them deciphered very quickly…really reinforced just how many
ABE learners have
undiagnosed LD.
Read an article about Benjamin Franklin. Read and discussed several of
his inventions and talked about
the "Poor Richard's
Almanac."

& function, including their dynamic
Did crossword puzzle, read and
discussed some articles in New For You.
Good discussions about the
Tsunami victims and the use of DNA testing in matching "found"
babies with their real parents. Also
discussed how a Venus Fly Trap works…what triggers the opening and
closing of the plant? There are
3 hairs on each leave…when an
insect touches one of them, it causes the leave to close….this
happens because the leave contains water and when the water is moved
because of the insect
touching the hair, the shape of the leave changes from concave to convex
and thus closes.
We also covered some antonym practice exercises.
Lots of energy today and really loud class.

Good class today! Did a good amount
of work on the concept of pictographs. Class learned how to
read one and actually developed their own graphs after doing some practice exercises from the
graph
attack book. Was able to incorporate some math work, addition and
subtraction as well as a bit of
division in solving some equations associated with the graphs.

Continued our quest to learn as
much as we can about the Holocaust and to understand the thinking
behind the slaughter of so many people. Today we focused on another
group targeted by the Nazis, the
Romas (gypsies). Read and
discussed the history, customs, origins and culture of the Roms, Loms and
Doms, the 3 major tribes of the
Romas. One student commented on the similarities in dress between
the Gypsies and the hippies of the 60's. Also made a comparison of the
migration of gypsies with no
real material ties and the attitudes of the hippies who basically turned
their back on the material world.
Godd discussion with several students weighing in. Interesting class.

magazine pictures to complete their
books. Everyone really seemed to
enjoy compiling and illustrating these books.
This was a good group
project that incorporated
writing, computer skills, getting students to pick and choose appropriate
pictures to illustrate/demonstrate what they had written about and some
excellent group /teamwork in
getting the books finished.
