Tuesday, January 25, 2005  3 Learners present.  2.5 hours

  --Learners' "PLACE" in relationship to the rest of the world (Environments & Interdependence)     Use

appropriate tools for gathering information (Critical Thinking)  

Did some review practice with map and graph reading. Practiced with bar graphs, circle graphs, road

maps and political maps. Went over the "parts" of a map…key/legend, scale, title, and compass. Used

rulers to do some measurements and conversions based on scales on maps. Good Class!!!!!!

Grammar review…synonyms, homonyms, antonyms, idioms, frequently misspelled words. .  Good

review for group…some did well and others struggled to recall meanings of certain vocabulary words

and some idioms.

  --  Write words without visual prompts or examples (Writing) Develop reading Vocabulary (Reading)  

Represent and use numbers in a variety of equivalent forms and in order relations (Number Relationships &

worked on math…converting fractions to decimals to percents. Review of long division for those

working at that level. Did a crossword puzzle for fun for the last hour.

Tuesday, January 18, 2005  5 Learners present.  2.5 hours

  --Dynamics among power, authority, and participation (Power, Authority, & Participation)     Recognize

there is not always a "right" answer (Critical Thinking)  

Continued our work on the Holocaust unit.  Reviewed previous chapters and vocabulary and then

proceeded to next chapter….Hitler/Germany's role in WWI.

Worked more on writing projects. New volunteer Dorothy helped students edit their writings on the

computers. Read story…The Strangest Jigsaw Puzzle in the World. Did some grammar and

comprehension exercises.

Worked on first drafts of biographies. Everyone got through most of the writing prompts in the

introductory section of outline. 

 

Had interesting and focused discussion about the Tsunami…what it was, what caused it, what might

happen in that part of the  world as a result of it…"is this the same kind of natural disaster that did the

dinosaurs in?", "didn't Nostradamus predict this?"

Made outline of what their autobiographies will look like in final form. Set end of February to have

them completed. Worked on some basic poetry. Created 2 acrostic poems…one using letters of their

names and one using letters of something they liked.

Nina the volunteer shared with us the story of her family Menorah (a continuation of our Hanukkah

history). We lit the candles and made guesses as to which one would burn longest.  Did a crossword

puzzle, did the "Genius" test for fun…class got the hang of it after we did about 3 or 4 questions.

Independent time was a mix of productive and less productive work.

grammar and mechanics (Writing)   Separate response to message from response to speaker/medium (Critical

Read and discussed the history of the Miranda Rights. Did a Q & A with students before we read the

story to see how much they already knew about their rights when you are questioned or arrested by a

police officer. Many of the students were pretty savvy but were surprised that some of what they

thought were rights were not rights at all. Good discussions and participation by majority of class.
