Thinking) UNDERSTANDS SYSTEMS - Social, organizational & technical
systems -
and operating effectively with them
(Systems (Understanding Complex Relationships)
When does someone have the right to restrict another person's speech? What could give them
that right? What are the basic arguments FOR Freedom of Speech?
The class wrote in response to those prompts and out of the following
discussion we defined "slander"
and "libel" as false speech (or writing) that causes injury.
We also classified speech situations by place, time, and
"who". It also came out that
"Freedom of
Speech" is considered a basic AMERICAN right.
Then we read some quotations from Federalists supporting the Sedition
Act of 1798. The Federalists
were actually able to pass a law punishing speech critical of the
government in a time of war and
uncertainty. There was a lot of
difficult vocabulary in those quotes.
Then people wrote again with the knowledge that Free Speech has been
restricted by Congress in the
past.
