Pro Choice v Pro Life

It was a small class but everyone had been present for the Abortion discussion (Roe v. Wade) on

Tuesday, and they all said that they had been thinking about it.

We started by making a framework for looking at the arguments for and against abortion.  We decided

that such arguments could be "emotional", "factual", "legal", "historical", "personal" or "social".  We also

identified what may well be the key arguments for both sides:  "Right of a woman to choose what happens

to  her own body" or "Right of the unborn to a life".

We started writing to a template: "Some people believe ________________, but I believe

______________________ .  I believe this because

_______________________________________"

While people were writing, Joe found arguments from both sides on the internet.  We read through some

of them and then started to identify them as ""emotional", "factual", "legal", "historical", "personal" or

"social", "Medical/Scientific", "Religious/Moral" and/or "logical"

Landmark Supreme Court Cases, Abortion, Laws, and Morality

We started out mostly doing individual writing, research, and reading.  (Most people were working on

their Supreme Court Case).  Then (based on Roe v. Wade) we discussed the rights of women, the rights

of the unborn, the rights of fathers while trying to think about how "Laws" are not exactly the same as

"Morality" (ideas about right and wrong).

Some questions: How important are emotional arguments as opposed to factual arguments?

"How should laws take into account different rights and different ideas about "right and wrong"?

Sentence Combining Exercises.

Joe would write short sentences on the board. We tried  to combine them.  We tried  to combine them

into longer sentences.  Sometimes we had to use special combining words.  One group of combining

words includes "and", "but", and "or".   Another group of combining words start with "wh" (who, what,

when, etc.).  We tried to come up with the shortest combined sentences.  We counted the words.  It was

like a game.  We liked some long sentences better than other long sentences.
