The Glowing Pickle Christmas Miracle!

We knew John was going to come in and make a pickle glow. (We really didn't know how or why that

would happen.)  We reviewed our Building Block Framework of Matter, but this time paid more

attention to subatomic particles (especially electrons which have a negative charge). We also looked at

a classification system for different forms of energy.

John used household current to make a pickle glow.  (It was pretty bright.) People were able to handle

the apparatus (galvanized nails, grounded electrical cord, and  pickles along with some safety

equipment including a Plexiglas "blast shield . . . Don't do this at HOME!)

John explained that it the resistance to a flow of electrons in an element (such as a pickle ) is what can

generate heat or light.  (Pickles do not give off very much heat, but are pretty bright.)

--      Represent and use numbers in a variety of equivalent forms and in order relations (Number Relationships

& Computation)  MATHEMATICS - Perform basic computations; approach practical problems by choosing

from a variety of math techniques (Basic Skills)

Equivalent forms for fractions

Looked at how fractions can be expanded and reduced. (It is much better to think in terms of

multiplying and dividing when doing equal fractions).

The answer to fractions problems should always be in lowest (simplest) terms.  (You often need a

fraction in a form OTHER than lowest terms to help you SOLVE a problem.)

There is no way that an improper fraction can be equal to an improper fraction.  (there is no

conversion - an improper fraction can be reduced to another improper fraction or a whole number -

never a proper fraction)

Discussion on Free Speech

We had a brief discussion about the First Amendment organized around "Principles v. Reality".  As

part of the discussion we went over the constitutional definition of "Treason" and the principle of

"Seditious Libel" was introduced.  We also talked about how Freedom of Speech does not always

extend to "Slander" (Lies) "Fighting Words" or "Obscenity".

We also discussed how the  concept of Freedom of Speech was based on traditions older than our

constitution and how it has evolved over time.

Then we had Individual time until Ephraim Eisen (the singing Rabbi) from the Synagogue came for an

excellent presentation and discussion about Chanukah.
