Joint activity with pre GED class. Al Siano, Town Councilor came in and talked about the town

government process and his role as a Town Council member.  Students asked questions. Very

informative and good experience for students.

Read some articles from News for You including an article about oysters making pearls which lead to

a discussion and listing of "things that are made by other things/animals/etc.  We did the crossword

puzzle and then did Map activities

  --How different perspectives on human behavior, interactions, and history affect people's understanding of the

 world. (Perspective & Interpretation)       

Combined groups activity with Pre GED class. Did Political Scavenger hunt. Used Boston Herald

Newspaper and Scavenger Hunt Activity. Put class into groups of 2 or 3 with list of 15 political themed

 items to locate in newspaper. Class had to find items such as a political cartoon, a picture of the

candidates, a positive or negative comment, a political symbol, a political issue, the temperature in

Washington, DC, etc. Class seemed to have fun with activity. We went over each item and had some

discussion. Was interesting to explain the difference between a political cartoon and a cartoon that

mentions a political word/words.

  --  Awareness of rules for grammar and mechanics (Writing) Develop reading Vocabulary (Reading)    

Current events…crossword puzzle, read several articles from News For You and did some writing

exercises. Did a very focused activity on cause and effect using an article from paper on nursing

shortage in  USA.  Went over the planned activities for the autobiographies they will be creating based

 on writings in their  "Writing Your Life"  books.

Read a story about the huge wave that destroyed 2 ships in Alaska in 1958.   Divided class into small

groups and give them vocabulary words from story to look up and then create sentences for.

Did crossword puzzle. Read several articles and did some writing exercises. Discussed the upcoming

election a little.

  --       Identify unresolved questions (Doing Science & Technology)

Started reading about the sun and how all energy is derived from the sun. Discussion led to

conversation about how the earth began("The Big Bang Theory" vs Religious theory),  the evolution of

man to how genetics affect looks(Can 2 brown eyed parents have a blue eyed baby?). Really interesting

 class. Will continue energy discussion next week.

  --       

Used measuring cups and measuring spoons to do hands-on fractions. We used a recipe for a cake

and measured the ingredients, then reduced the recipe by half, then increased the recipe by five. Used

a good amount of multiplication and division. Class seemed to like it after the initial grumbling. I brought

 the measures in at their request. Told them be careful what they ask for, they just might get it!
