Quasi-snow day…Schools had delayed openings due to bad weather so students didn't come. Used the

time to make a trip to the Food Bank to stock up for new cycle.

Tuesday, March 16, 2004               5 Learners present.                                                    2.5 hours

  --Allocation of power and authority (Power, Authority, & Participation)      

Lots of discussion about the Patriot Act. Students read a summary of the act and talked about what it

meant. They felt that the government is infringing on our rights. Very concerned about "their information"

being shared without their knowledge. Continued reading about the history of medicine…Read about

Lister and Louis Pasteur.

Monday, March 15, 2004               5 Learners present.                                                    2.5 hours

  --  Write at greater length in response to a topic or question (Writing)    

Went over the long division problems we were practicing on Thursday. Talked about goals for the coming

 cycle….both personal and class goals. List generated: math, both individual and group work, focus on

budgeting; writing with a continued focus on essay construction; resumes and portfolios…what goes into

them?; Science…biology and earth science; Social Studies, more use of videos to supplement class

work, U.S. Constitution, Maps/Graphs, Specific dates and circumstances surrounding events i.e.: Civil

War, WW I, WW II, Constitution, Revolutionary War.

Small class today. Class decided to work on long division.

Thursday, March 04, 2004             6 Learners present.                                                    2.5 hours

  --  Express thoughts in complete sentences (Writing) Develop reading Vocabulary (Reading)   

Read short stories from "Issues" book about history of anatomy and surgery during Dark Ages, Middle

Ages and the Renaissance. A good amount of practice responding in writing to questions using complete

 sentences. Picked one question and composed a "group effort" paragraph. All this in keeping with our

forward movement towards being able to write an essay.

  --      Select & use appropriate methods and tools (computer, paper, calculator, mental) for solving problems

(Number Relationships & Computation)

More fractions!! Focused on multiplying and dividing using cross cancellation. Difficult for them to get but

finally towards the end of class they were doing problems fairly comfortably.

  --  Express thoughts in writing (Writing)    

Read "The Englishwoman and Her Daughter," short mystery story. Discussed story line. This story was

based on an actual disappearance. Because mystery was never solved, we decided to strategize about

how we would continue an investigation. Made a list of several points we would pursue. Had them

change list into a paragraph of how they would proceed. Will work on editing paragraphs on Thursday.
