"Slice of Learning" Pie Eating Contest

The Charboneau Learning Center of The Literacy Project and Antonio's Pizza will contribute to "Classic Day" festivities on May 22 with a "Pizza Eating" Contest.   The contest will be held on the dining terrace of Antonio's at 1:00 pm.  Antonio's Pizza is on the corner of Main and Miles Streets in Greenfield.

The contest will have 3 divisions (youth, lightweights, and heavyweights) starting at 1:pm on May 22.  Antonio's will make as much pizza as necessary. There will be a $5.00 charge for early registrants and $8.00 for walk-ins. The proceeds of this fundraiser will benefit The Charboneau Learning Center.  Prizes have been contributed by many leading businesses from the Greenfield area.

Antonio's Pizza has been under new management for just over almost 3 years.   They take pride in being part of the culture of downtown Greenfield, and are always looking for ways to contribute to the advancement of the Greenfield community.  "Helping The Literacy Project is my way of making sure that every adult - and every young adult - in Greenfield has an opportunity for an education," says Clayton Cardin, the co-owner of Antonio's.  "In today's economy, people without a good education have a terrible disadvantage."

In the twenty years that the Charboneau Learning Center has been offering classes, they have seen major changes in the types of people who come for more education.  "It used to be mostly people who had lost jobs or who had the ambition to try to get a better job," says Louise Barrows, the Site Director of the Learning Center.  "Now, these people are just having a hard time holding onto a job, if they can get one," she added.  But her biggest concern is the increasing number of youth who are seeking educational services.

"The age group between 16 and 18 years of age is becoming a bigger percentage of our student population.  And, that's fine, if they can function in an environment within adult expectations," said Barrows.  She added, "On the bright side, we are successfully transitioning more and more of our GED graduates to Greenfield Community College.  We love it when they make the Dean's List!"

Proceeds from the Pizza Eating Contest will help pay for GED testing fees, and may also assist with additional programming to help transition GED graduates to jobs or to college.  The Charboneau Learning Center is currently collaborating with GCC, The Career Center, and Franklin Tech to offer culinary arts and job readiness training to eligible youth.  They are extremely pleased and grateful to Antonio's Pizza for sponsoring this fundraising event.  Antonio's Pizza is organizing the event and is contributing all the pizza.

Residents who think their ability to consume large amounts of pizza could benefit a local educational agency should contact The Charboneau Learning Center of The Literacy Project at 774-3935.  Or they could stop by at 201 Main Street to get additional details from Antonio's.

The Charboneau Learning Center has been offering GED and Adult Basic Education classes to area residents since 1984.  During that time they have helped hundreds of residents earn their high school equivalency diploma while improving basic literacy skills such as reading, writing, and math.  The Charboneau Learning Center and the administration of The Literacy Project have just moved to a new location at 15 Bank Row in Greenfield.  Classes are held between 9:00 am and 12:15 pm on weekday mornings.  There are also evening classes on some weekdays from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.  The public is invited to stop by to see their new facilities on weekday afternoons, though appointments are encouraged.  An "Open House" for their new location is scheduled for June 8 from 3:00 to 6:00 pm.

The Literacy Project provides accommodation for persons with disabilities,
