Successes/Highlights

P21 Planning Session in Turners Falls

We were pleased that "transitions to college" received a lot of attention in this session which is part of a state-wide initiative.

Nine Matriculations at GCC

Amber also attended the first day celebration of college classes with a band and barbecue!  One of her participants

completed a last minute registration there, and checked in with some college "veterans" who shared their college

experiences.

Staffed Youth Services Round Table "Healthy Teens Healthy Communities" Booth at Franklin County Fair

This was our second year having a presence at the fair.  We collaborated with the Distance Learning Program this year.

Street Outreach in Greenfield

Amber always carries her business cards and a lot of enthusiasm.  This month she was able to give at least 8

young people a detailed description of our STEPS (Transitions) program in the course of daily errands..

Picked up Free Books!

This was a very large donation of high quality books.  Our initial impulse was to take what we could use and share

the rest.  Financial developments (or lack thereof) did require us to change our plans and these books are now part

 of an entrepreneurial fundraising endeavor.

Follow up on 57 GED Pretests

Amber called 57 telephone numbers with these results:

7 No answers / disconnected numbers.

12 wrong numbers.

23 messages left with other people or on answer machines.

16 direct communication. 11 of these have taken their GED and 5 have not. Four of the eleven are at GCC, 10

people are working, and one person has moved to New York.

Class Activities

Louise's Morning ABE class worked on map activities, grammar exercises and lots of Civil War

 materials.

Joe's morning pre-GED class was grimly enthusiastic about making sure they fulfilled their

monthly writing expectation.  This was facilitated by some new online courseware called

Moodle. Moodle does have some glitches, but it is free and works well enough.  (Like all

software it is a work in progress.)  They also continued to work hard on the Civil War and

Scientific Classification Systems.

The Afternoon Transitions to Success (Non rates based class) started with 3 learners.  One of

them was also enrolled in the morning class to meet her DTA requirements, but she needed to

withdraw to pursue gainful employment.  The other two are both focused on further education

and took to Moodle like ducks to water.

The Evening GED class also had a renewed sense of purpose with all of them completing the

monthly writing expectation and posting their work to Moodle.  Moodle "Workshops" also allow

learners to evaluate specimens of completed assignments posted by the instructor.  Most

people enjoyed these activities.
